Book Sharing Activities for Love You Forever by Robert Munsch

Sunshine Mamas and Papas!  This is a great Mother’s Day read.  It will bring tears to your eyes with its simple text but deep conveyance of  unconditional love between mothers and their children.

1.  Read the book aloud with your child.  Discuss the story and the illustrations.  Ask questions such as these:

Do you remember being a small baby and what you were like? Ask them if they ever did things when they were little like the boy in the story.  Do you think that your mother will be able to pick you up when you are bigger? Why does the grown-up man sing to his very own mother?  Why does he sing to his new baby?  Tell your child about the day he was born. Children love to hear about the special details of that day. Tell him about some of the songs you sang to him when you rocked him to sleep.

2.    Talk about the song that the mother sings in the story.  What does it mean when she says she will “love her child forever and like her child for always?” Can a grownup boy or girl still be the “baby” of his parents?  It is important to help your child understand the concept of unconditional love. Explain that children sometimes do things that make their parents upset or sad.  Parents do not always like the actions of their children, but they always love their children.

3.  Talk about the sequence of the story. What happened first?  What happened next in the story and what happened last?  Talk about what is real and what is imaginary.  Did the mother really go her son’s house and climb up to his bedroom on a ladder?  Did the grown boy really pick up his elderly mother and rock her in his lap like a baby?  Help your child to understand what the author is trying to say about the love between the mother and her son.
