Melbourne Beach: Round About Town……

Hey Mamas, so I have been thinking about some of the healthy places in our town and thought I would start sharing with you some of my favorites.  In this first installment, I wanted to tell you about two new up and coming places on beachside.  One is a restaurant and one is a sports specific retail shop…and so much more.

Island Stride Sports – They Love to TRI and so should you!  Island Stride Sports, was founded in 2010 by a group of local Business owners to offer multi-sport lifestyle products for the local triathlete community.   Based in Indialantic, along Fifth Avenue, Island Stride Sports is a haven for triathletes of all levels.  If running, swimming and cycling are you passion you have found your answer.

Island Stride SportsIsland Stride Sports came to life because of the “see a need fill a need” vision.  Their ultimate goal is to become “the” Brevard County premier destination for the best in Tri apparel and accessories.  And they will accomplish this because they treat every customer like they are training for their most important race.  Your performance, comfort and success are their performance, comfort and success.

What sets Island Stride Sports apart from other sport specific shops are the services available.  Not only will a customer find the best in shoes and apparel, but also have the ability to have an analysis performed on their running/jogging/walking gait ….in HD Slo-Mo; you gotta see this!

They offer Natural Running Instruction and Beginner Social Runs (which include Trail Running and Speed Work.) Island Stride Sports is also one of the founders of Brevard’s only USAT Club.

You won’t find your mainstream equipment here…you will find brands like Newtown, Zoot and Pearl Izumi.    You’ll find accessories for hydration like Nunn products and one of my “never leave home without it” items…Road ID.

According to my friend Jesse Hall,  marketing, all around great guy  and a plethora of information…Island Stride Sports hosts many training clinicsand ongoing workouts including run-bike bricks, open water swims and a transition area to help hone all the skills needed to get your best personal record.   You can meet up with others to learn and train together.  These are open to athletes of all levels.  And to make the workout more interesting, the Island Stride Sports Facebook page posts video from these training sessions, race results and support and kudos messages for their patrons. Their complete training calendar is posted on their website at www.islandstridesports.com.

If you are a true triathlete or aspire to be, this is the store for you!  Race to Island Stride Sports… they love to Tri and it Shows!

Bamboo Fish, Co.Next up…I hope you’re hungry cuz I have the Bamboo Fish Co, which should be the Bamboo Fresh Co. Hidden away in Melbourne Beach at the “Flag Pole” on Ocean Avenue,  as it is so lovingly called, is a small restaurant that opened within the past couple of months.  Co-owners and native Melbourne Beachers, brother and sister team Jessica and Zach Morris had a dream.  Zach lived in California and visited a restaurant that inspired him.   A vision of simple, healthy, fresh food being consumed by their community, in a relaxed low–key environment.  What’s the phrase “if you build it, they will come”.  And that’s just what the locals in Mel Beach do.  Zach said that “At least half of our business is repeat, local business, and most of that is on weekends”.

They get some beach traffic, of passersby noticing the new establishment.  But if you ask me this is the perfect place to eat during the week.  It’sfast, it’s inexpensive, it’s fresh, it’s healthy and it’s made to order and it’s sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good!  Do you think I put enough o’s in there?  My family and I eat here at least twice a week.  We all have busy schedules and my daughter and I have food allergies.  And the Bamboo Fish Co is ONE place that we can ALL agree upon.  Currently they have two outdoor tables adorned with tikki umbrellas, and they will be expanding to add a few additional tables.  If my 6 ½ year old (who would not be happy if I left off that half a year) loves to eat the mahi mahi and brown rice bowl,  and the shrimp sandwich, then you know it has to be good.  The rice bowl comes with zucchini and yellow squash on the side.  A complete nutritious meal for any appetite.

Their staple dishes are your fish of choice from shrimp, mahi mahi, grouper and tuna.  For the landlubber, they do offer grilled chicken as an alternative.  If it’s nutritional content you are looking for, the brown rice alternative that they offer is first of all the best brown rice I ever had.  I mean they made me a convert not just on nutrition, but in flavor.  To that, the nutritional value for your edification via Caloricount.com is: Calories: 218 per cup Total Fat 1.6g Saturated Fat .3g Cholesterol 0g Sodium 0g Carbs (not a four letter word): 45g Dietary Fiber: 3.5g  Protein 4.5g

And really do I need to spell out the benefits of fish, ok….I will.

Mahi Mahi (via Livstrong): A 100 g, or 3.5-oz., serving of cooked mahi mahi provides 109 calories, 24
g of protein, 1 g of fat, 0 g of saturated fat, 0 g of carbohydrates, 94 mg of cholesterol and 113 mg of sodium, according to NutritionValue.org. Mahi mahi is high in vitamin B-3 or niacin, vitamin B-6 as well as the minerals phosphorus, potassium and selenium. A 100 g serving provides 7.4 mg of niacin, or 37 percent of the recommended daily value or DV; 0.46 mg of vitamin B-6, or 23 percent of the DV; 183 mg of phosphorus, or 18 percent of the DV; 533 mg of potassium, or 15 percent of the DV; and 46.8 mcg of selenium, or 67 percent of the DV.

If you want additional health benefits of fish, please visit: http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/oehas/fish/fishbenefits, the Washington State Department of Health.

Currently the Bamboo Fish Co is seeking those individuals who are young and enjoy the beach life for employment opportunities.  Jessica and Zach can be seen at the shop Tuesday-Sunday and are in need of some assistance.   When you are down at the south beaches on Ocean Avenue, please be sure and stop by.  The phone # is 723-3474.

PS.  If you are in my seat when I get there…be afraid be very afraid, oh not of me, but of my 6 ½ year old daughter.  lol

So ,there you have it.  Two of my new favorites in our town and I am sure that they will be yours.  What are your healthy favorites in town?

BTW…please be sure and mention sunshinemamas.com when you go and tell them I sent you ;).
