Pregnant? How About a Midwife?!

Pregnant? How About a Midwife?!

Some people still believe the earth is flat, the sun revolves around the earth, you get cramps if you swim after eating, the streets of America are paved with gold…hospital births are safer than home births, doctors are safer than midwives…you get my drift!

What people fail to realize that midwifery has been around for centuries.  Women have been attending births since the beginning of time!

Midwifery allows your birth to become a family affair.  You can involve older brothers and sisters, family, friends, or even just you and your significant other.  It gives you the freedom to move, the freedom to choose minimal to no interruptions in order to let your body labor naturally!  This is called “The baby dance!”

CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) is a knowledgeable skilled  and professional  midwifery practitioner who has met the standard certification set by the North American Rescissory of Midwives (NARM).  They are qualified to provide the midwives model of care.

The CPM is the only US credential that requires knowledge about and experience in and out of hospital setting.  There are approximately 900 CPM’s practicing in the US today!

Midwives undergo a 32 month vocational training program or an 18 month nurse conversion course (on top of a 32 month nursing coarse).   Ultimately this means that a midwife potentially has 5 years of training and education!  You can catch a lot of babies in that time!:)

CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) is an individual educated in two disciplines of nursing and midwifery.  They are someone who possesses evidence of certification according to the requirements of the ACNM (American College of Nurse Midwives).  This includes basic certification baccalaureate and a masters degree program in nurse-midwifery.  All of the 45 accredited education programs are associated with an institution of higher learning.

According to two recently published studies midwife attended home births were accomplished with safety comparable to that of conventional births.  In fact, physician attended hospital births have never been shown to be safer than midwife attended home births for women with normal pregnancies.
