Things to Do at the Beach Without Getting Wet

Things to Do at the Beach Without Getting Wet

Although swimming in the ocean is one of the best parts about living in a coastal state, there are times when you and your family might want to have fun without getting wet – particularly on cooler days. Here are five different things to do at the beach that do not include or require getting in the water.

#1 – Have a Picnic

A picnic is always a great idea since it gives you and your family an opportunity to escape from the house and enjoy a nice meal in the great outdoors. Picnics are especially popular with kids who enjoy anything that seems out of the ordinary. Make sure you bring blankets and lots of kid-friendly foods along, and to keep sand out of your grub, consider using a small blow-up swimming pool to store your goodies.

#2 – Comb for Seashells

One of the best things about Florida is the variety of wildlife living on or close to the shoreline. You and your family can make a day of combing for seashells, and even have little contests to see who comes up with the largest or the most colorful ones. What’s more, if you’re feeling crafty, you can take your shells home and make jewelry with them. (Just be certain nothing is living inside beforehand.)

#3 – Send a Message in a Bottle

This activity goes great with a picnic since chances are good you’ll have a leftover bottle. Ask each member of your family to write a message, tuck it inside the bottle, cork it tightly, and let it float out into the ocean. If you want to get really creative, set up a PO Box and ask whomever finds the bottle to write you a letter back. This keeps your personal information private, and you and your family can check the box once per week to see if anyone has found your message.

#4 – Build an Elaborate Sandcastle

When it’s too chilly to swim, or when you’ve simply had enough, there’s nothing quite like building an elaborate sandcastle. Bring tools from home that can help you here, such as spoons, buckets and sturdy paintbrushes for creating texture. The whole family can get involved with this project, which makes it a lot of fun. Don’t forget to take a picture when you’ve finished; your sandcastle will be gone before you know it.

#5 – Take Photographs

Before going to the beach, give everyone in your family an inexpensive disposable camera and encourage them to take photos of the critters they see. These can be bugs, fish, crabs – anything that draws attention. Later, you can have the photos developed and compare pictures, which offers up an awesome opportunity for some great conversations – and some learning experiences for the kids.

Although there are some days when swimming in the ocean just isn’t a feasible choice, that doesn’t mean you have to stay away from the beach altogether. These five activities offer up lots of fun and engagement for everyone in the family, and they can help you create a lifetime of memories.
