Carlyn’s Journey-Dr. Quirk, XIII

“I am where I am because this is where God has put me.” Unknown Author

Last week I took a much needed break from my blog. As most of you know, I am a first grade teacher. Last week happened to be the last week of school, which equals CRAZY. So, I am sorry if you were expecting my blog and it wasn’t there. I am back!

My last blog entitled “Ultimatums”  talked about the end of the relationship with Dr. Coo Coo, my chiropractor. Just to give you an idea of where we are in my fertility journey, my experience with Dr. Coo Coo happened two years ago. Believe me, she didn’t let us leave without a fight! Honestly, it was like a breakup. I found myself saying, “It’s not you. It’s me. We can still be friends,” and “I will always remember you as my first acupuncturist.”  She even wanted to sit down and discuss the DANGERS of infertility treatments with Robbie and I. I of course blamed our leaving on Robbie, saying it was him who wanted to go to a specialist. (Well, breaking up is HARD! Don’t judge me!)

I was ready to see what God had next for us. After I got over the guilt of leaving Dr. Coo Coo, (she was so upset for loosing us to those darn medical people) I got my Infertility game face on.

Until this time, Rob had been very nonchalant about the whole having babies issue. His basic attitude had been if it happens, great. If it doesn’t, great!

So it took me by surprise when he came to me and said that if we were going to really try to conceive, we needed to find a reputable infertility specialist. At first, I thought he was just saying this to get me to stop spending money on “snake oil,” but to my pleasant surprise, he conveyed to me that HE was finally ready to get serious about having children.

The next step was really praying and listening to God about where we needed to go to find the answers we needed.

My mother-in-law told me about a specialist in the Birmingham area that she had heard many good things about. She also saw a write-up in the newspaper on how he had been listed in The Best Doctors in America since 1994. So far, this doctor was sounding really good, but the true test would be the sit-down with him. I knew what I was looking for in a specialist after what we had been through in the past, so I compiled a list of MUSTS that needed to be met to be considered a right fit.

I am attaching a website that I think is very helpful when choosing a good fertility clinic/specialist. It aligned perfectly with what we were looking for:

I also thought it was great that this specific clinic had a website. A lot of times, this is a good way to get many of those initial questions answered. It also gave me a feel of what I was walking into, and who I was going to be dealing with.

We set up an initial appointment with this specialist who I LOVINGLY refer to as Dr. Quirk.  He was a funny guy who had a very dry sense of humor. Robbie LOVED him. Robbie has always been a good judge of character, so I was willing to give this doctor a try. Everything went well, and we were very impressed with what we heard.

He had received all my previous records, so when we went in, he was ready for me with a plan that he was confident about.

One thing that made me very happy is that we were going to be able to do all procedures WITHOUT CLOMID!!!!

“HALLELUJAH!!” Robbie said.

Bless his heart! Maybe this was why he liked him so much!

We decided to give Dr. Quick and his fantastic staff a try at giving us a baby with good ol’ IUI or Insemination.

Remember, we did this with Dr. NoShow, but it went terribly wrong when their office was closed over the weekend. This resulted in us having 12 embryos.  We had to abort the whole procedure.

So naturally, one of my first questions was, “Are you open on the weekends?” Their answer was, “We are open when the body needs us to be, holidays, weekends, or whenever.”

That was music to my ears!!!

So I was set. The next month, we would begin Dr. Quirks IUI regiment. I was excited, hopeful, and ready!

Next week’s agenda is full of success, disappointment, and God’s unfailing love and comfort! See you then!
