Enjoying Your Amazing Newborn

Enjoying Your Amazing Newborn

I’m here to tell you about an outstanding program that I take with my little one, Ileana. The class is called “Playtime with your Amazing Newborn” and it caters to babies from 6 weeks to 3 months and lasts for 14 weeks.  I began taking Ileana when she was 8 weeks old and she absolutely loved it. The teacher, Miss Lori is wonderful. Class begins with circle time. During circle time, babies are placed on your lap to sing songs out loud. Miss Lori uses Mickey Mouse as her baby and the newborns love him. Then blankets are laid out and parents sing to them while they are on their backs. Most of the songs have movements that go along with them. Miss Lori teaches songs that I grew up with as a child. Then she brings out a big parachute. The parachute moves up and down as music is played in the background. It is so much fun.

The second part of class is “play time.” This specific class focuses on “belly to play” and the five senses. Each class, a new tummy time activity was introduced as well as something for Ileana to smell, touch, or taste. I found this extremely helpful because Ileana was so NOT a fan of being on her belly. Now, I can’t put Ileana down without her flipping on her belly. It’s wonderful! Parents have the opportunity to go around the room and try all of the different activities. There is a mat with plastic balls, a mirror with toys hanging down from a bar, a waterbed, tummy time mats, balls, feathers, rattles, shakers, you name it…they have it. Not only is this a chance to try out new toys and activities before you purchase them, but you can also have your newborn play next to another newborn and begin social interaction.

The class concludes with parents and newborns joining in a circle again. At this time, parents get 15-20 minutes to discuss any issue they want. I enjoyed this part the most as a first time mom because you have the opportunity to talk about your anxiety, exciting news, questions, feelings, funny stories, etc. Then Miss Lori always ends class with a question of her own or food for thought. We sing good-bye and on the way out we can pick up our article of the week. The articles discuss breastfeeding issues, sleep for you as well as your newborn, going back to work, the ferber method, all the good stuff.

The class is offered at Nova University. There are many other classes offered as well to cater to your little one growing up. Ileana is now in a class called “Baby Rocks Baby Rolls” and enjoys it just as much. To get more information you can visit the website at www.nova.edu/msi/earlylearning/pplace/index.html. I have written specifically about this class because it’s where I have chosen to take Ileana. By using the google search engine you can find others as well, such as:

Each new baby starts out their lives with a unique set of characteristics. They may look like mommy or daddy, and develop a personality similar to them as well. It is said that the habits of a parent, intelligence, and emotions, as well as birth experience, shape a newborns beginnings. While this may be true, experts say what you do as a parent with your baby the first year of their life can have a tremendous impact.

If you are a parent in Broward County and know of any other places, please leave a comment below. It will be helpful to all of us. If you live in another county and know of a place worth telling about please share and leave your county as well.

I hope you are all enjoying your little ones!
