Who Knew? Baby Showers…

Who Knew? Baby Showers…

I recently made my first baby shower appearance since my miscarriage in December. I wondered how it would make me feel and what emotions would arise. I currently have seven family/friends in my life that are pregnant. Yes, SEVEN! This means I am in for a whole lot of baby showers! As we drove from Pembroke Pines to Gainesville I was so excited to see my beautiful pregnant cousin. As I arrived, watched her celebrate, and open her gifts, the feelings of joy continued. I strongly believe that pregnancy is a miracle in life. I was so happy to have been part of that celebration and blessed that I was able to handle it emotionally. With that said…I was so glad to share the experience of my cousins first baby shower with her.

Did you know “baby shower” is a term used when you celebrate the soon arrival of a baby by presenting gifts to the parents at a party. The term “shower” is used because the parents are showered with gifts. Although there has been no recorded evidence of the origin of a baby shower, it is believed that the concept of baby showers have been in practice for many centuries. One thing is for sure, ancient civilization felt that the announcement of the arrival of a baby called for celebration, which they did in the grandest way possible. Those who arrived for the feast in turn would bring the mother useful and pretty gifts, which were mostly hand made.

Traditionally, baby showers were given for the families first child, and only women attended. It was intended that women would sit around and share wisdom and lessons of motherhood. In some cases, this still holds true but not everyone is so traditional these days. Some baby showers are co-ed, held as one big party, or are done not only for their first child.

Baby showers include food, games, gifts, and cake. They are not only held in homes anymore either. Many people use restaurants, dance halls, or park pavilions as well. They are usually hosted by close friends or family. The theme and style are to be determined by the host and may include the mom-to-be as well.

Whether you are having a baby shower or planning one, here are some websites with ideas for food, themes, games and invitations.
